Tác phẩm “Nhật ký trong tù” là tập thơ gồm 133 bài, viết bằng chữ Hán, ra đời trong một hoàn cảnh đặc biệt. Tháng 8/1942, Nguyễn Ái Quốc bị chính quyền Tưởng Giới Thạch bắt giam vô cớ tại Túc Vinh, Quảng Tây, khi Người sang Trung Quốc công tác với danh nghĩa là đại biểu của Việt Nam độc lập đồng minh và Phân bộ quốc tế phản xâm lược của Việt Nam. Và từ đây bắt đầu hành trình 13 tháng đầy gian nan, cực khổ trải qua 18 nhà lao của 13 huyện thuộc tỉnh Quảng Tây. Trong những tháng ngày đó (tháng 8/1942 – tháng 9/1943), Người đã sáng tác tập thơ “Ngục trung nhật ký” (Nhật ký trong tù).
