Carl R. Roger sinh ngày 8/1/1902, tại Oak, Mỹ. Ông là con thứ trong một gia đình theo Tin Lành nghiêm khắc. Gia đình ông có trang trại rộng, cùng với lòng say mê nghiên cứu khoa học nên không khó hiểu khi ông theo học ngành Canh nông tại Đại học Wisconsin. Sau khi tốt nghiệp đại học, ông quyết định học ở Chủng viện Union Theologial Seminary năm 1924. Tại đây ông bị hấp dẫn bởi các bài thuyết giảng về tâm lý và tâm lý trị liệu. Sau đó ông chuyển tới trường Sư phạm thuộc đại học Columbia. Năm 1931, ông nhận bằng tâm lý học giáo dục và lâm sàng.
