Năm 1970, Nguyễn Ngọc Ký tốt nghiệp Đại học Tổng hợp Hà Nội, khoa Ngữ Văn, sau đó đi dạy và trở thành Nhà giáo Ưu tú năm 1992 và là nhà văn Việt Nam đầu tiên viết bằng chân.
